Red Sox fall as Rays rough up Felix Doubront

RECORD: 8-15-2
BREAKDOWN: The Rays roughed up lefthander Felix Doubront, who gave up eight runs on 10 hits, including a home run, and two walks with six strikeouts in 4⅓ innings. He faced 12 batters over the first two innings, needing 44 pitches, and gave up four runs. Rays starter Matt Moore and relievers Brandon Gomes and Juan Carlos Oviedo combined to hold the Red Sox hitless into the seventh inning before Xander Bogaerts’s one-out single. The Sox finished with five hits while the Rays had 13.
THUMBS UP: The Sox sent seven batters to the plate in the third inning, scoring a run without getting a hit, as Moore issued four walks.
THUMBS DOWN: The Rays’ first four runs off Doubront all came with two outs . . . David Ortiz went 0 for 3 with two strikeouts. He is batting .057 this spring, going 2 for 35 with 12 strikeouts.
MEDICAL REPORT: Lefthanded reliever Craig Breslowis scheduled to appear in a game Monday for the first time this spring, in a minor league game.
AROUND THE BASES: It was a scary scene to end the fourth inning when Bogaerts’s liner struck Moore in the face after deflecting off the lefty’s hand. Moore recovered to make the play, but he left the game. He had a laceration on his lip which required stitches but had no concussion symptoms, the Rays said . . . The Sox have won just once in their last nine games, going 1-7-1 in that stretch . . . Sox hitters went 5 for 31 with nine strikeouts in the game.NEXT GAME: The Sox travel to Sarasota to face the Orioles Monday at 1:05 p.m. Lefthander Drake Britton is scheduled to start, with lefthander Brian Matusz starting for the Orioles. The game will not be on TV or radio.
