SCORE: Pirates 4, Red Sox 2.RECORD: 8-12-1.
BREAKDOWN: Making his second start this spring, Jake Peavy went 4⅔ innings, allowing one run on four hits and a walk with five strikeouts. He threw 74 pitches, 47 for strikes. The lone run he gave up came on Travis Ishikawa’s home run leading off the fifth. The Pirates had nine hits, including three off Burke Badenhop, who gave up one run in two innings. Making his third start, Pirates lefthander Wandy Rodriguez went four innings, allowing one run on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts.
THUMBS UP: Will Middlebrooks was back in the lineup after missing the last two games and four of the last five with a hyperextended right middle finger. He went 1 for 3 with a run. He also was charged with an error on Jose Tabata’s grounder in the third inning, but was part of a nice double play to end the seventh when he tagged out Michael Martinez going to third and raced to second to tag Jaff Decker . . . Andrew Miller faced one batter, striking out Travis Snider looking on three pitches to end the fifth.
THUMBS DOWN: David Ortiz went 0 for 3 with a strikeout. He is hitting .067 (2 for 30) this spring with 10 strikeouts . . . Dalier Hinojosa, who took the loss, falling to 0-2, gave up two runs on two hits, a walk, and a balk in one inning.
MEDICAL REPORT: Lefthander Craig Breslow, who has been brought along slowly because of last season’s heavy workload, threw a bullpen session Wednesday. He is scheduled to throw live batting practice for the first time on Friday and could get into a game on Monday.
AROUND THE BASES: Former Sox players Tim Wakefield, now a player development consultant, and Jason Varitek and Pedro Martinez, who are now special assistants to the general manager, were in camp on Wednesday. They were in uniform and spent part of the day on the back fields watching the minor league games . . . Catcher David Ross turned 37 on Wednesday.
NEXT GAME: The Red Sox host the Yankees Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Clay Buchholz will be opposed by fellow righthander David Phelps in a game that will be on ESPN, NESN, and WEEI (93.7).
